Islands in the Sky

Islands in the Sky was my major production and the final piece of my course at AIE. this project was completed during a 15 week period along side personal work. this short film was made by a team of 16 people, split into 8 modelers, 4 animators, 2 Riggers and Creature FX artists and 2 FX artists. the short ended up being an anthology series with its full length reaching 90 seconds. shown here are 2 shots that demonstrate my work on the project the best.

for this short i was responsible for the concept, modelling, texturing and look development of 'Bentley the Tortoise's' Fishing Rod as well as the island (not including foliage). i was also responsible for the look development the Nasturtium plants seen in the foreground, the bushes seen in the background of the island and for the grass.

another invaluable skill i was able to gain and continue to hone were my soft skills of working in a studio environment, participating in dailies and working with multiple departments to develop assets simultaneously. 2 major examples of this department synergy were my development of my 3D model of the fishing rod, i had to work in tandem with the animators and the Rigger responsible for the asset to enable for proper proportions of the handle, and necessary topology to enable proper deformation with the rig. i also worked with the Rigger to help assist in the process of the fishing rods line being able to simulate properly. the second example of this studio based workflow is the Island 3D model, i had to work with the FX artist responsible for creating the geo of the foliage to ensure that my displacement maps worked correctly with her geo. as we ran into problems of geometry clipping through each other, we were able to find a fix and the final product features minimal clipping
